Sunday, May 13, 2007 – 9:10 AM and 1:15 PM – Robbery of a Gas Station – 25th and 3rd Street – CS# 070 487 648 & 070 488 163 - At 9:10 this morning a clerk at gas station on 3rd and 25th Streets was robbed at gunpoint. The gunman entered the gas station and demanded that the clerk to open the register and hand over the money. He then ordered the clerk into the bathroom. When the clerk emerged, the gunman had fled. A witness saw the gunman running and a search was performed. A possible suspect was found and a cold show was performed. Unfortunately, the witness and the victim were not able to identify him.

A few hours later, Bayview units were in the same area when a pedestrian flagged them down and was yelling, “Hey that guy robbed me” and a Nissan was speeding away from the scene. The officers gave chase and were led to the Potrero Hill Housing Projects. The officers lost sight of the car briefly but found it abandoned by the Potrero Hill Recreation Center. A passerby pointed out to the police where the suspect ran. The Officers followed the lead and saw the suspect in the Potrero Hill Housing complex. It was determined that the suspect ran into a cluster of housing units. A search was performed and a resident pointed to a man in her house, and said that he just kicked down her door. This man also happened to be the one that was being chased by the officers.

Officers responded back to the gas station to look for the victim that flagged him down but they were unable to locate him. Without the victim the officers could not charge the man with robbery. However, there were plenty of other charges. It is unknown if this suspect was connected to the earlier robbery.

SFPD Housing Officers Sanders, Fowlie and Rodatos responded to the 1900 Block of 25th Street regarding a shooting. When they arrived they saw the victim laying in the street bleeding from what appeared to be gun shot wounds to each leg. The Officers secured the crime scene and began rendering medical aid. An ambulance arrived on scene and transported the victim to San Francisco General Hospital. Officer Fowlie rode in the ambulance with the victim to obtain additional information. The victim said that a female had dropped him off at 25th Street at Wisconsin Street. The victim said that the suspect then arrived in a vehicle and began shooting at him. The victim said he realized he had been shot so he pretended that he was dead so the suspect would leave. The victim refused to tell Officer Fowlie who the female was that had dropped him off. The victim also refused to tell Officer Fowlie what the suspect looked like and the description of the vehicle he had gotten out of. Several units arrived at the crime scene and attempted to obtain additional witnesses to no avail.

Homeless Coordinator Officer Lavin responded to 25th and Pennsylvania on a report of a illegal homeless encampment. When she arrived on scene, she saw a blue tent set up with several items placed around the tent. A white male was just riding away from the campsite on a bicycle as she pulled up. She stopped the man, asking him if the campsite was his. He told her that it was his campsite. Officer Lavin then detained the man and decided to pat search the man for weapons. Being an experienced officer, Officer Lavin asked the man if he had anything sharp on his person. The man told officer Lavin that he had a switchblade knife in his pants pocket. Switchblades are actually illegal in the state of California and possession is a felony.

Officer Lavin reached into the man’s pocket to retrieve the knife, but also felt a small bag of powder as well. The knife and the bag came out at the same time. When the suspect saw the baggie, he said, “I forgot that was in there.” Officer Lavin recognized the bag as methamphetamine. A warrant check revealed that the suspect was wanted on an outstanding assault with a deadly weapon warrant. He was transported back to Bayview Station where he was booked on weapons, narcotics, the warrant and illegal encampment charges.

The woman said that the suspect looked like he was in obvious pain and she wanted to help him. He requested that woman get some lotion and a pair of scissors. She went to her nearby office and retrieved those items. The suspect appeared to working on his problem and asked the woman if she could help.

The woman agreed but required the man to place a t-shirt in the problem area to form a barrier so she would not have to touch skin. After a few moments she realized that the man did not have anything caught in his zipper. She told the suspect that she had to go back to work. It was then she felt that she had been victimized and called the police.

Officers Ma and Cabuntala were driving north on San Bruno when they noticed that the driver in front of them seemed to be weaving inside the north bound lane. They followed the driver onto north bound 101 where the driver now weaved between the two right lanes of 101. They were able to stop the driver at the Vermont St exit and a DMV check revealed that the driver’s license was suspended. He was placed under arrest and during a search incident to the arrest, Officer Ma found heroin, plus other narcotics on the driver. A similar search on the front seat passenger revealed that he also had heroin and crack cocaine, but this time in quantities and packaging for sales. Because of their suspicion that the driver was under the influence of narcotics, the officers called for a specially trained officer, Officer Erb, who is trained to test for being under the influence of narcotics. Eventually the suspect, as well as the passenger were booked at Bayview Station on DUI and narcotics charges.

A pat search on the male suspect, sent a gun flying down his pant leg and on to the ground. The suspect yelled, “I need that for my protection.” But then realizing what he just said then said, “I just found that.”

The female suspect was searched and a large quantity of crack cocaine was located. The couple was booked on narcotics and weapons charges at Bayview Station.
