Vehicle Burglary – 2700 Block of 17th Street
4 Apr 2006A Potrero Hill resident was alerted this early morning by the sound of glass breaking. He looked outside and saw someone inside his car. He called the police and kept an eye on the suspect. The caller said that the suspect took items from his car and loaded it into a bag. The caller observed the suspect walk to another car and open the passenger door and place the bag on the seat and walk away. Officers Farrell and Anderson arrived on scene soon after and saw the suspect. They ordered the suspect to put his hands up. In the suspect’s hands were a screwdriver and a flashlight.
The victim came outside and stated that the police have the right man. The bag that the suspect left behind was recovered and the victim identified the items inside the bag as the ones that were taken from his car.
A search of the suspect revealed that the suspect had a crack pipe. Studies have shown that a crack or heroin addicts will have to steal approximately 150 to 200 thousand dollars worth of merchandise to support their habit. That is lot of citizen’s cars and homes that will be burglarized. There are numerous victims in the City that can attest to this.
The suspect, a parolee, was booked for numerous theft charges.
